Just superb writing....the scenes between Travis and his mother are so poignant. You are pulled into the story as you await the next emotional outburst from Kane and the reaction of his family. It is almost as if you want to reach out help Kane get a grip on his life, doesn't he realize how much pain he is inflicting on his wife and children who love him dearly. You find yourself turning the pages hoping that he has some sort of epiphany and lives will be all the better for it. With such a complex character, one wonders if he has the self-awareness to slowly change in a positive manner, to learn from his weaknesses and be a better person in the next go round. But then isn't that what good writing is all about, to make you want to read the next edition.

This is an exciting, complex and emotional introduction to Daniel Kane, LA Homicide Detective, and his dysfunctional, artistic and loving family. The family saga is the best part of this novel! Allowing an unapologetic and realistic glimpse into this family's complex, heartwarming and sometimes emotionally barren relationships pulls you into this story and moves you into hoping for healing, reconciliation and an acknowledgment of the love and tragedy that binds them together even more strongly than just "being a Kane." The story is well developed and hard to step away from but the character development is really the artistry of this work, each person so well crafted that they are indivual and unique, easily recognizable and consistent throughout the book, and equally as strong and flawed as the people you know in your own life. They are amazing and the difficulty in creating such fleshed out, fully created characters, especially in this quantity in one novel, is a feat that shouldn't be overlooked any more than the stirring, exciting roller coaster ride of the plot line. It's an excellent story and leaves you eager to continue the series and spend more time within the lives of these characters and their problematic, often humorous and always emotional lives!

Flamehammer

This is only second book that actually moved me to hate the main character. If I had read this installment first instead of reading other installments first I would have never read another Kane novel. That would have been my loss. I had to force myself to finish this book. I believe that the similarities in this book and my life were so strong I hated Kane the Father but admiring the cop. This book is well written and it is a very strong story. The author reached me and the emotions he in stirred in me were very strong. Very good author, good story and maybe a slight promise of redemption of a strong personality.

When I first started the book I had no idea where it was leading. The first chapter did not seem to fit with what immediately followed and I kept wandering when that bit would fit and have a finish.

The writer doesn't leave you hanging, he sets the stage well, pulling you deeper into the story with fully fleshed out characters. He does a fantastic job of pulling you in with characters you see as fully developed people; insight into their thoughts and emotions.

When I finished the book, I was left wanting more - what happens next? It's about family dynamics - true to life, no one is perfect. He did a fantastic job of showing the interaction and feelings of siblings; the love, jealousy, endless teasing that can send one on an unexpected tailspin, parental favoritism and how that plays out in the formative years of each sibling' s life.

I could hear the barbs and teasing as I read - I have 4 siblings and I still remember those times. Well done!!! I say to those who did not grow up with siblings, this will give you some insight into that world. At times it seems as if they dislike each other but at the heart of it all remains a love like no other.
Read the book for the story and take away the lessons learned or to be learned.

I will definitely read more books written by this author.

Kann

The first of the many surprises was how detestable the main character, Kane, is as a human being. And not just the first look at him. He only truly becomes a human being in a couple of spots. The puppy and the piano concert.

The second and perhaps biggest surprise was his character development. The entire first third to half of the book is seemingly endless and seemingly pointless dialogue between the members of the family. Had I not read how stellar this book was supposedly, especially for a first novel, I might have quit. But it turns out that through those dialogues, you began to get the nuance of the very different personalities of each member of the family, and their relationships with each other. In the second half, those relationships play out.

I must say, without saying what, I was able to predict the outcome of the first chapter with frightening accuracy, long before I knew the players. But I could not predict the rich depth to which the author took us in that outcome so deep into the book, now fully and deeply understanding the personalities and relationships.

Bravo I I will immediately order the next in the series, while the characters are still fresh!

Mr. Gannon's novel was a terrific read. The author painted a vivid picture of a troubled family, driven by the violence and hate of its patriarch. The characters and their various conflicts came alive. I detested Kane. He ran his family like a general driving his troops into war. The reader doesn't see his vulnerabilities until Tom dies, but even his vulnerabilities are overshadowed by the violence of his nature.
The ending was a bit ambiguous, making the reader want to purchase book 2. (We didn't know how Travis placed in the competition.) I've never read this author's novels before, and plan on doing so.

The story is real it is angry, sad, funny, brave, obnoxious, irritating. Most of all it touches even in places that are uncomfortable
. I don't give 5 stars almost ever. In reading well over 100 books per year I have rated 5 stars only 3 or 4 times.
