by Fils, Alexandre; Henriette Metcalf (Trans) Dumas (Author). Some sixteen versions of the story have been performed on Broadway alone with well-known actresses vying for the role of Marguerite, and over twenty films of the tale have been made into motion pictures, with the first done in 1915. Dans le Paris demi-mondain du début du XIXe siecle, ou riches héritiers. This is the tragic story of the life of a courtesan, Marguerite Gautier (dubbed Camille or Lady of the Camellias for her always carrying a bouquet of the flowers), who, by willing sacrifice that could never have rewarded her in kind, proved her purity of love. It is also a lamentable apologetic story told by Armand Duval, the man who sworn love for her but judged her too harshly, too unwisely, and painfully abandoned her.

Armand’s narrative is bookended with a short first-person narrative by an unidentified man to whom Armand tells his tale. The story portrays the courtesan Marguerite in a very favorable light.
