Ben Kane's Spartacus-Rebellion did not disappoint. I found the story quick paced and plausible. The only place where it "strayed" was a section of the book where Spartacus & another character infiltrate Rome in an attempt to assassinate Spartacus' main protagonist Crassus.

Ben Kane's Spartacus-Rebellion did not disappoint. I suppose you have to have certain "Hollywood" aspects to most modern books. That being said, it's a great read & will hold your attention. Just knowing the story & how it historically concludes, only enhances the books appeal.

Spartacus has already done the impossible―not only has he escaped from slavery, he and his seconds have created a mighty slave army that has challenged Rome and defeated the armies of three praetors, two consuls, and one proconsul. But storm clouds are gathering on the horizon. One of Spartacus's most powerful generals has defected, taking his men with him. I'm posting the same review for SPARTACUS: THE GLADIATOR and SPARTACUS: REBELLION because I can't imagine reading one and not the other. It's one story and it's a brilliant one.

Mr Kane mentions in the Afterword how deeply the story of Spartacus touched him. It's an enduring legend because anyone can relate to the courage of one man against impossible odds. His legend has also endured due to the fine work of writers like Howard Fast and Ben Kane. I read somewhere the best writers don't write in ink, they write in blood. There's so much heart in these books, I can see Mr Kane's devotion to the legend on every page.

The final battle is one of the most thrilling accounts of what it would be like to stand in a shield wall against the odds with trusted friends all around you I've ever read. I can only compare it to BCornwell's account of Waterloo or DJackson's wonderful depiction of Claudius' victory in Britain. Mr Kane mentions reenactors in his afterword, but it's not hard to imagine in another life he stood on an ancient battlefield swapping sword blows. His writing has that level of authenticity.

I could go on, but I need to get stuck into another of Mr Kane's books right away! Thank you, sir, for such an inspiring and entertaining read!

Ben Kane is becoming one of my favourite writers. I am sorry that I came to his work so late. This is the second of this series. It is a tragedy in the Greek sense. Spartacus know that in the end Rome will catch up with him, But he plays his role to the end with honour. Better to be free than not. Better to lead than not. Better to be true than not.

Ben Kane has covered the ground literally. He walks the countryside to get a feel. His research is immaculate. And this knowledge and love shine through the narrative. In his books, people make sense. Their predicament and the geography and the culture all fit together correctly.

The book comes to its natural end with a journey up the Appian way with a crucified man at every 40 paces. It is hard not to cry at this point - Kane has helped us identify so closely with the protagonists.

You can dismiss this kind of book as mere genre writing. But I see it differently. I think we too live at a time quite like the end of the Republic, when money took over. Freedom and liberty are not just words but important things that most of have lost. I sense that many are quite like slaves really. There are also men like Crassus all around us. I put the book down thinking about my own life and what is going on today in our own time.

I am off now to buy Kane's Hannibal books. I suggest you go there too.

If this were 10 years ago, this book would be an easy 5 star (few Spartacus books had been written). . In fact, they should have a half star rating possibly for the near perfect book. I would have went for that. Basically this book picks up where his first Spartacus novel stops. It was a little bit of an odd starting place but if you read the first book you see that makes it about 1/2 the whole story. Plenty of action. Not as much godlike characteristics like the TV show. Plenty of cursing, a little humor and a few British slang words (did not detract from the story). The author spent a lot of effort researching Spartacus and it shows in a more accurate account. Note there were only a few thousand words about Spartacus as Rome certainly did not want to glorify a slave that defeated a handful of trained Roman legions. I highly recommend this book and the forgotten legion trilogy also. Of course you should read the Spartacus gladiator book before you read this one. Even held up to the special effects of television this gives it a run for it's money; in fact it was hard to stop reading it.... shu

I've always loved the story of Spartacus, as a lover of things Roman and military history it's one of my favorites. About 90% of what I read is non-fiction, but occasionally I dive into a good yarn, or in this case a good interpretation of true historical events. Ben Kane's Spartacus-Rebellion did not disappoint. I found the story quick paced and plausible. Those of us who are fans of the "Spartacus" TV series, recently concluded on Starz, will find Ben Kane's two-book series informative and entertaining. Even if your only glimpse of Spartacus was from the 1960 Kirk Douglas movie version, this holds true. Kane presents a slightly different, but perhaps more accurate portrayal of Spartacus than we saw on TV. The first major difference is that Kane's Spartacus has a wife from the very beginning, whereas the TV version lost his wife to slavers at the start of his own captivity. The TV Spartacus let the memory of his wife's captivity, and eventual murder, drive him toward escape and rebellion. Kane's version seeks freedom from the very start, freedom to return to his native Thrace and unite his people against the Roman invaders. Kane also presents a plausible answer for one of history's most compelling questions: why did Spartacus decide to turn south, back into Italy, when he could have escaped over the Alps?
The book, like the TV series, is not for the faint of heart. If descriptions of brutal combat---and in ancient times it was far more brutal than today---along with very rough language are not for you, stay away. Or at least gird yourself. It will be worth it.
