Patricia Potter likes to write about only children suddenly finding they have an undiscovered family (see "The Perfect Family"). In this story Samantha Carroll learns that her mother has hidden the fact that she (Sam) is the daughter of an infamous crime boss and that she has a twin brother, Nicholas, whose reputation is dubious as well. Samantha is thrilled to meet her brother but he is not sure about her. She also has various aunts, uncles and cousins and one of them does not want her to be included in her dying father's will.
FBI agent Nathan McLean is yearning to take down Samantha's entire new crime family, but finds himself smitten by Sam. Their relationship blossoms despite each one's hidden agendas. When trouble inevitably finds Samantha she must determine who she can trust, Nathan or Nick.
The outcome is not surprising, but the ride is fun. Potter writes a good story and her characters are very likeable. It is certainly worthy of a few hours on a cold night.

Patricia Potter never fails to keep a story going with enough twists and turns to make it impossible to figure out the plot.

Samantha, an art shop owner and model citizen of Small Town, Colorado finds herself in a strange position when she discovers she has a long-last father she never knew about... but he's not just anyone... he's the head of a mob family in Boston. Even after her mother begs her not return from the life they fled from 30+ years ago, Samantha is ever-so-curious about the crime lord and takes off without much hesitation. (Mostly because she wants to meet her twin brother.)

Nathan is the cop-on-the-case who has his eyes on the crime lord and his family, especially the son of the family Nick... he has a shadowed past and a personal vendetta against the family to boot.

Normally I love Patricia Potter and I've read all of her historicals. I ventured into her contemporary and found myself less than thrilled with this book. First of all, it was definitely shelved wrong. It's not a romance really... more like chick lit. The story is mostly about Samantha discovering her roots and the violence that comes along with it. She and her brother are definitely the main characters.

The heroine doesn't even meet the hero until after page 100, nearly a third of the way through the book. Their first kiss takes place in an elevator and it's only their second time meeting and they've literally exchanged about ten phrases. I never understood why they were falling for each other. They didn't really talk much... in fact her hero opens up to her finally, but basically, just when they declare their love to each other.

That being said it was still a three star and read-worthy book because I really did enjoy seeing the relationship between the twins form after being apart for so long. It was well done and rewarding and sweet. It just wasn't much of a romance!
