James Meek’s fourth novel opens with a scene that seems stolen from a Tom Clancy thriller, albeit one with a sharply anti-American twist. While attacking an Iranian nuclear plant, American soldiers shoot hundreds of young women, one of whom catches the massacre on a video camera even as she is killed: She recorded it all, under the harsh lights.

James Meek?s masterful historical novel, The People?s Act of Love received accolades around the world, earning Meek comparisons to Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky, Conrad, and Greene. We Are Now Beginning Our Descent is a tour de force of storytelling, furthering his reputation as one of the most exciting and original young novelists writing today. Adam Kellas, a British journalist, would-be thriller novelist, and failed lover meets Astrid Walsh, a self-possessed, hard-charging reporter while the two are covering allied military operations in the Afghan mountains.

I grabbed this book to read as Meek is coming to Barrie for the International Festival of Authors and I wanted to experience his writing. Boy, am I glad I did. It took a while before I got engrossed in the book, but once I did, I had a hard time putting it down. The plot moves back and forth in a continuous basis between late 2001 and late 2002, with a epilogue in 2003. The main character is Adam Kellas, a British journalist who have lived a very nomadic life during his journalistic career.

Truth and lies on the front line. He is a correspondent in Afghanistan, who dreams of writing a bestseller. Through Kellas, Meek finds a complex perspective on the ego and frustrations of the frontline journalist. James Meek's We Are Now Beginning Our Descent ranges from London to the war zone, says Tim Adams. He kicks off with an extract from the novel that Kellas is writing while working in Kabul. It is tale told from the point of view of a young woman in Esfahan in Iran.

It is the beginning of a journey which takes him from the mountains of Afghanistan to the elegant dinner tables of north London, the marshlands of the American South and, ultimately, to the darkest realms of the human imagination. Only the memory of the beautiful, elusive Astrid, a fellow reporter in Afghanistan, offers him the possibility of hope. Books for People with Print Disabilities. Internet Archive Books.

James Meek's new novel is obsessed with how to tell the truth

James Meek's new novel is obsessed with how to tell the truth. Its self-absorbed Scottish protagonist, Adam Kellas, Afghanistan war correspondent and aspiring novelist, becomes preoccupied with a fellow journalist, American Astrid Walsh. Its tragicomic events unspooling in the early 21st century, We Are Now Beginning Our Descent is a novel for an age of dodgy dossiers. Like Meek's first book, McFarlane Boils the Sea (1989), this new work splices together several narratives, and sometimes wears its literary antecedents on its sleeve.
