Finished reading Nevil Shute's "Round the Bend" the other day finally. Round the Bend is based largely in the middle east, in settings I hadn't heard of and aspects of cultures I was not particularly familiar with. It's taken a while and I haven't always been in the mood to read it but it is a fine piece of work overall. What originally drew me to it was the aviation aspect and the romantic, adventurous notion of someone setting up an airline in a foreign land in the time period. They didn’t seem to have a lot of use for any of us, and yet, I think we’d done a useful job while we were there. Perhaps it would have been better if I’d gone into the officers’ mess, as I could have done long before.
