The Bones of Time book. The story is still very engaging and well written, the concepts offered up still stand because Kathleen is a great author and because of this is I still feel this is one of the best historical science fiction stories I've read - beats the pants off of Cloud Atlas - but technology has moved on slightly and so what I would've considered cutting.

What you need to know about Kathleen Ann Goonan is the following: She's talented, thoughtful, and one of the most humanistic writers currently in the SF field. Her QUEEN CITY JAZZ was one of the best and most exciting books of the nanotech fiction boom of the early 1990s. In her humanism and in her unhurried narratives, she reminds me of Maureen F. McHugh, and in her fluid writing style and intellectual seriousness, she reminds me of Robert Charles Wilson.

Kathleen Ann Goonan (born 14 May 1952) is an American science fiction writer. While her second novel 1996's The Bones of Time (Tor) featured some elements of nanotechnology science within it, it is not part of the Quartet, and was not centered on these ideas. Instead it mixes Hawaiian mythology with a spy thriller type chase through Asia centered on the cloning of one of Hawaii's native rulers.
