Star Surgeon by Alan E. Nourse

A very quick, easy read. Really I think this could fairly be a YA title? And please note that I do enjoy YA titles, so that was not a bad comment. I actually read the entirety of this book on my flights home from Denver a couple of days ago. Yes, it's that quick.
So, yes a quick read, but fun nonetheless. Basically a young outcast seeks to embitter himself, and also serve the greater good. He has troubles with his fellow crew on the Patrol Ship Lancet, and also from the hierarchy from on high.
The characters are all pretty one dimensional, and pretty much what you would expect. But they do drive the plot, and there are some interesting ideas that are brought up.

WOGY

I read this book in the 1960's. It is even better this time around.
Like Star trek, a futuristic story with a good plot dealing with multiple issues applicable today.
I really enjoyed the story and its message. . .again.

Beydar

I have a hard time judging this book. It started off well and seemed to be headed into a wonderful path and then just turned left and lost me. It ended well, but the middle was a muddle for me.

Marad

This is classic juvenile fiction written by one who is very familiar with medical routines and protocol. The premise is that medical treatment of illness and disease, for some reason, is almost unknown in the galaxy - except on earth. Terrans focus on and monopolize the providing of medical care to all the other intelligent races using lightspeed transport to Earth, large hospital ships and physicians in small ships to handle emergencies. They want to use this service to enter into the already existing federation of planets, as each prospective race needs to bring a unique offering to the group to be able to join.

The story concerns a young alien from a trading planet, whose desire to become a surgeon frightens those who wish to keep medical knowledge and skills to themselves.

Wonderful story; great characterizations.

Boraston

I read this book the first time in 1959 & I loved it. I was pleasantly surprised. This book is just as good as I remembered it. It's a little dated, but the story is still good.
