In the first DEATHWORLD novel, space rogue Jason dinAlt discovered the secret of Pyrrus and negotiated a very tense peace between the planet and its two human colonies. Now Jason has a new problem. I loved the first few books of his STAINLESS STEEL RAT series, which were just that. But sometimes Harrison decides to acquire an agenda and whomp us over the head with it.

I also liked how the primative technology, coveted by the painfully ignorant natives, plays a major role in the story. Reader Gregg Margarite also does an excellent job, and without him it would not be as good a book.

Wnex

Missing several sex scenes and last third of Harrison's full novel. Wish I'd bought "Deathworld II" instead, which has those missing parts. John Campbell edited sex and third section from the Analog magazine serial, which this is, including editor's blurb, page breaks, and illustration credit, but not illustrations themselves.
In this one you miss how Jason navigates the upper level of the planet's technology (such as it is) and dog-eat-dog city-state politics. If you are a fanatical completist, buy; all others, look for "Deathworld II."
For similar reasons, I suggest "Tunnel Through The Depths" over "A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah."

Fortunately for me, I read Deathworld before reading this sequel. So, I knew what was going on. To read this without reading the first would not make much sense. The only other review of this story complained that it was too short. Frankly, I'm glad it wasn't any longer. The hero's undying efforts to keep safe the person who kidnapped him in order to see him "brought to justice" started to get annoying. In fact, I got annoyed at our hero at the beginning of the book because he allowed himself to be captured by resisting assistance from his friends on the new world he'd helped "get organized." OTOH, if he had allowed his friends to help him, the story would have been over before it started. Not a bad thought, but that would have been a REALLY short story.

I didn't give it less than 3-stars because it did have some adventure to it. And, I did read it to the end.

We have the same hero as in Deathworld now having to fight for his own life in a different setting and way. We have a zellot in the extreme. To some, this may appear highly offensive, but I wish to remind you that it is science fiction fanticy and that can sometimes be over the top. I mean, come on, you have a hero that seems to be a walking, talking expert on just about everything, but he's so likable, you can forgive him that. And, the people that he is up against, as in Deathworld, are so close minded, they almost self-distruct - many time in a very funny way. Harry Harrison puts it forth with lots of humor. I found myself laughing out loud.

Foxanayn

Definitely *classic* science fiction, and by "classic" I mean "old" (to steal a joke from the Car Talk brothers). Our hero is better than everyone else, smarter, faster, more virtuous, and most of the other characters are dumber than a box of rocks. Spends a lot of time pushing a personal philosophy, which did not bother me as much as it should because I happen to agree with it.

Meanwhile, it is fun space opera, page turner, good entertainment, especially for a free book.

Good story. We expect that other worlds are developed far beyond ours. He is a case when it is not and an engineer is the only outsider to make a broken machine working. Redemption comes in the most unexpected ways. You know there is something about those old Maytag repair commercials with the guy sits in the office waiting for a repair call. You never know when you will need that knowledge.

Harrison is one of my favorite authors. I read this once years and years ago in hardcopy, and liked it. When I found it on Kindle for free, I had snap it up. While I prefer his Stainless Steel Rat and Deathworld Trilogy, this is good, too. He has a very easy and approachable prose style and his stories are all engaging (if sometimes in unusual ways). For a stealthy book like this, you can't pass it up.

Winotterin

Harrison's protagonist tries to convince a religious zealot that morality & ethics are situational - dependent on the rules of society at that time & place. He has lots of adventures on a couple of planets and meets some interesting folks.
This was quick paced, easy to read, and fun.

Jason Din Alt is almost as cool as Jim DiGriz... but Angelina and Meta are a much closer contest... I've reread both series, many times, and enjoyed them every time !
