Silicon carbide (SiC), also known as carborundum /kɑːrbəˈrʌndəm/, is a semiconductor containing silicon and carbon. It occurs in nature as the extremely rare mineral moissanite. Synthetic SiC powder has been mass-produced since 1893 for use as an abrasive. Grains of silicon carbide can be bonded together by sintering to form very hard ceramics that are widely used in applications requiring high endurance, such as car brakes, car clutches and ceramic plates in bulletproof vests.

A thin ceramic plate of silicon carbide is impacted by a blunt cylindrical (4340 Steel) projectile

A thin ceramic plate of silicon carbide is impacted by a blunt cylindrical (4340 Steel) projectile. The plate is of the dimensions 100 mm x 100 mm x 10 mm. The steel projectile has a diameter of 30 mm and a length of 23 mm. the objective is to obtain damage/failure velocities in the thin ceramic target and finally draw a graph between damage velocity and projectile velocity.
