Pyotr Alexeyevich Kropotkin was a Russian activist, scientist, and philosopher, who advocated anarchism. He wrote many books, pamphlets and articles, the most prominent being The Conquest of Bread and Fields, Factories and Workshops, and his principal scientific offering, Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution. From 1867 the next five years were largely devoted to study, especially investigations into the glaciology of Finland and mapping the Siberian mountains. In 1871 he declined the post of secretary of the Russian Geographical Society, as he was drawn increasingly into revolutionary activity.
