by Ratan Tatiya (Author). Civil excavations mean those excavations that are usually under the purview of Civil and Construction Engineering disciplines, in terms of their planning, design, execution, construction and maintenance. From The Book: "Excavation means dislodging the rock or ground from its place in situ and disposing of it from there, thereby creating an opening. When exposed to the sun and atmosphere this opening is known as an open cut or surface opening, and when the opening is created beneath the ground and not exposed to the atmosphere it is known as an underground or subsurface opening

The excavation industry is booming and this trend will continue due to the growing world population which is likely to be doubled from 6 billion in the year 2000 to 12 billion at its present growth rate by the year 2040, and also due to changes in the lifestyle, living standards and progressive outlook within countries, with each country aiming to grow from. its current level of undeveloped to developing; from developing to a developed country and from developed to superpower.

Basic tunneling system.

Basic tunneling system. Tunnels are generally grouped in four broad categories, depending on the material through which they pass: soft ground, consisting of soil and very weak rock; hard rock; soft rock, such as shale, chalk, and friable sandstone; and subaqueous. Excavation of the ground within the tunnel bore may be either semicontinuous, as by handheld power tools or mining machine, or cyclic, as by drilling and blasting methods for harder rock. Here each cycle involves drilling, loading explosive, blasting, ventilating fumes, and excavation of the blasted rock (called mucking).

Surface excavations include benching, trenching, channelling, pitting, demolishing, road construction and constructions related to Civil and Construction Projects. Techniques to create a network of vertical, inclined and horizontal openings (Drifting, Raising and Sinking) that is required while constructing caverns for different purposes such as repository, oil storage, power generation and recreation facilities for general public have also been included.
