The last decade has witnessed an explosion in the use of Participatory Rural Appraisal methods. Some advocates of the approach have even claimed that PRA represents a 'new scientific paradigm'. The recent drastic development of agriculture, together with the growing societal interest in agricultural practices and their consequences, pose a challenge to agricultural science. The framework can form a basis for transdisciplinary work by way of showing the relation between more and less reductive kinds of science and between more detached and more involved kinds of science and exposing the abilities and limitations attendant on these methodological differences.
Postmodern philosophy is characterized by broad skepticism or relativism and a general suspicion of reason. How is postmodernism related to relativism? Although some postmodernists reject the relativist label, many postmodern doctrines constitute or imply some form of relativism. It also broadly asserts that Western intellectual and cultural norms and values are a product of, or are in some sense influenced by, the ideology of dominant or elite groups and at least indirectly serve their interests.
