This is a book that requires the reader to have a firm grasp of philosophy, to know the terms and definitions of the understandings of those who might write such a book. It is not for the novice in the sense that it may require a sense of the philosophical evolution of thought and belief about the Rg Veda and of those who write their interpretations of it, but it is nevertheless engaging and an approach to a new grasp of it.

The word meditation has many definitions: thought, consideration, deliberation, contemplation, reflection, and rumination. The author, philosopher, teacher Antonio de Nicolas asks the reader of this book to be engaging all of these, as this book prompts the fullest of faculties in grasping his hand and taking the journey into the past to the civilization where Rg Vedic man is alive and waiting for us to explore them and us.

It is the kind of adventure that also necessitates a dictionary if you are not conversant in the jargon and knowledge of philosophy, its main characters and their contributions to presenting ways of approaching life. The Rg Veda is the voices of the chanters, the sages, hoping that "...one may see them-the origins and the gods-when these hymns are chanted in future times..." (10.72.7).

One of the premises of this book is to appreciate that this author is taking the approach unlike so many others before him, as in their are the studies of the poetry, mythology, religious beliefs magic, and the songs of praises to their gods in the Rg Veda, but his is rather in the consideration of what this text presents through the context of the power of sound. It is looks at the cosmic connection and the transcendent nature of the Rg Vedic society's interpretation of the activities and attitudes of life by understanding the Language in the hymns that gave meaning and structure to their lives.

Students of philosophy will appreciate his grasp of logical comparison and interpretation. It is well worth the read.
