Reiko The Zombie Shop is one of the goriest manga to be released in print out in the States, which is possibly why Dark Horse discontinued the series about halfway through its run because of its limited market for adult titles. It's not hentai really, but the violence is and splatter scenes really make it the manga equivalent of a Rated-R movie.

Reiko the Zombie Shop, necromancer for hire is a young girl who can raise the dead. The translation is handled very competently by Michael Gombos. There are six volumes in the series, and all build upon the idea of raising the dead to find out what killed them. Of course there are also some interesting twists that go along with this, and surprising stories as well. Overall the series is really good, starting off with Volume 1, where Reiko shows up in town to help solve the murders of 29 young girls. You may remember Michael helped us with our article on Dark Horse and manga translation earlier this year. The English is smooth and appropriate for the story, (it is rated for older teens).

I found Reiko the Zombie shop completely by accident. I bought the first volume and while waiting for it to arrive, I went to a used book store. I was looking around in the clearance section and lo and behold, I found the second volume of Reiko. It was almost like it was meant to be. Reiko is almost composed of short little stories or arcs revolving around Reiko's adventures as the "Zombie Shop". For a price, she'll wake your dead, if only to find a clue to their demise, but she's not responsible for what the dead will say or do once they awaken! I fell in love with Rei Mikamoto's manga Chimamire Sukeban Chainsaw Girl. In my searchings for Chainsaw Girl I came across Reiko the Zombie Shop. I fell for this manga as well. Reiko is a necromancer that turns her abilities into a job. It's gruesome and good paced. I read it in one day. I couldn't put it down.

Was required to read this book for a university class on Japanese Zombies in Film and Literature.

Needless to say the creep factor for the stories within the book are at a max.
The author covers a wide range of topics from schoolgirl jealousy (to the point of murder) and even pedophilia and suicide.

The artwork is as graphic if not more so than the topics.

Not something I would recommend to anyone. Period.

Unlike some manga series with the word "zombie" in it, this one had for real zombies in it! The manga was released in Japan as an 11-volume series, but was released in English through Dark Horse stopping at the sixth(for now). The author, Rei Mikamoto, is more well known for creating the manga, Big Tits Dragon, which was later adapted into the live-action Japanese movie out here known as Big Tits Zombie. So, he's kept up a pretty decent history with horror/action stories, but it all stemmed from this original series.

Reiko seems like your average snarky busty redheaded Japanese schoolgirl, however she is really a "zombie shop". This means that she's able to summon someone back to life as a zombie if most of their body is still in tact, which gets her hired by all kinds of customers for her special talents. She does business with child murderers, mad scientists, plane hijackers, fatal rock stars, and even her friends at school who don't seem to have a problem with her being a part-time necromancer. All through the first volume there is a side-story of a teenage girl named Yurikawa that is also a homicidal maniac. She eventually crosses paths with Reiko, and the two have a climactic fight to the death, literally! One would think that having the title character die from decapitation in the first volume would be the end of the series, but Reiko was lucky enough to get some help from some fellow necromancers that manage to reattach her head and bring her back to the land of the living, while not being a zombie. Reiko then sets out to stop her evil sister Riruka who uses her own zombie-raising powers to create a walking dead army to take over the world, which becomes the focus for most of the rest of the series.

Weirdly enough, this does have a slight shojo factor working for it with Reiko and her interaction with her schoolmates. This makes for a very creepy manga, and works through like an actually good grindhouse flick with moments that will give you jump scares!

During the day, Reiko Himezono is your average high schooler, but after a hard day of academic life, she relaxes with the job where she earns some pretty good money. Reiko, "The Zombie Shop", has the unusual ability to call on that most understood of angels, Satan, to revive dead corpses to a semblance of life for a short time, allowing the dead person to speak and move around. She's not really ever called upon to revive someone for positive reasons. Reiko usually gets involved in situations where someone was murdered, committed suicide, or otherwise died under suspicious circumstances. I guess if a loved one died in a normal manner, the relatives assume they died in peace. But when someone has a doubt, Reiko can be enlisted to set their minds at ease. It's not a very safe job either, because the dead spirits sometimes crave revenge or the person who hired her is revealed to be involved in the death somehow and now wants to kill Reiko.

I didn't think I was going to like this book at first because a lot of the early stories were too short and episodic, but once the characters wheedled their way into my mind, I was hooked. Especially gripping is the main storyline that runs through the book about a serial killer who targets young children, who is on a collision course with the Zombie Shop. Reiko at first seems like a cruel mercenary who isn't very likeable, but later on we find out how loyal she is to her good friends. Even though she says she only does her job for money, her actions nevertheless bring justice to those who cannot seek it themselves...the dead. Good book.

I would also recommend the manga Chrono Crusade.

Rei Mikamoto, Reiko the Zombie Shop, vol. 1 (Dark Horse Comics, 2005)

Man, Reiko the Zombie Shop is a great idea-- a traveling necromancer (who also, of course, happens to be a gorgeous high school student-- hey, this is manga, right?) available for hire to raise the dead so the living can converse with them, to get information about how they died or what have you. Except that the dead that anyone would really want to raise are going to be... not happy. And here you can read "not happy" as "really, really violent."

The problem is that the writing isn't what one would call top-notch. (There's an amusing meta moment towards the end of volume 1 where one of Reiko's friends asks her "Zombie shop? What's that? A place where you can buy occult souvenirs?") And while I'm certainly willing to put some of it down to substandard Engrish translation, it becomes obvious the farther on you go that Mikamoto has gotten more proficient with language as time has gone on, and as the previous quote shows, is not above making fun of her own stumbles over language once she discovers them; I can only hope the writing keeps improving throughout the series. It also helps that, once you've turned the last page of this book, you'll wonder how on earth they managed to come up with a volume 2, much less an entire series. That alone will send you on to book two. It's an amusing little book, good for fans of Hideshi Hino or Suehiro Maruo (or, perhaps, as a gateway drug to them, for fans of more mainstream manga). ***
