check out this two volume story by Jean-Pierre Gibrat. I read this in the Norwegian translation after I came across it at the library. Liked the (very French) sense of humour, the twists in the plot. His use of fine line drawing and aquarelle painting for his panels is without equal in the field. The colour palette and the expresivity of his character portraits almost make me ignore the actual story behind the artwork, but I went back and re-read each passage, and I was rewarded with a powerful, yet understated personal drama that includes romance, war, politics, friendship and an irrepresible zest for life amid all the privations under the German Occupation.
