Wrathshaper

From the beginning of this novel, we have two distinct voices narrating. One is that of a young boy, as he re-tells the happenings of his childhood. The second voice is an omniscient third-person narration from which we learn of things that tell a different story altogether.

The boy's, Toby's voice is very unique. It has the flavor and inflection of the author's hometown - Bardstown, Kentucky, and the fresh intonations of a young lad for whom everything is still new and exciting. It's simple and recognizable:

"How do you like your eggs?"
"I like my eggs just fine Ma'am."

Not just in dialog - most of it is a monolog that is unmistakably told by Toby. There are small stories that are just everyday impressions, there are stories about the imagination of a young child, there are stories about what the adults call "paranormal" and kids don't really have a special name for because they don't think about these things as out of the ordinary.

The second voice tells us about the background story, the story of conspiracies, secret societies, the mystical creatures, witches, and the titular "object of power" - The Stone of Blood. It takes us through the hundreds of years of history, revolutions, royals, and even mentions Jesse James, much to my delight.

This is a pretty neat use of narrative tools, if you have the patience to see where it leads. And it does lead somewhere interesting. After the cave scene, the focus concentrates more on Toby. However, he cannot always tell what is real or not, nor he perhaps wants to. "What happens?" He asks himself, "When stories, myths and legends become real?" For a child, there's no such thing as a border between real, imagined, and supernatural. It all becomes one big reality, much the same way there's no large difference for him between something that happened last year or a couple of hundred years ago. The author manages to bring this feeling of a child's perception to the fore; well done. The story does become, however, more of an YA adventure/exploration from the middle on, with less contemplating and more things happening in a straightforward narrative, give or take a dream sequence.

There's a peculiar trend to use a lot of explanation points and round up the -ing, as in doin', goin', or sayin'. At first I thought these distracting but they do help to bring out Toby's voice.

All things paranormal - werewolves, witches, and ghosts, while interesting and essential to the storyline, do seem to take a back seat to the language itself of the small but well told stories of the childhood and the grandfather's tales. The author has a very special place in his heart for them and it shows. Good read.

A rare person can weave first person narrative with third person narrative. At first, I found this to be a confusing aspect of this book and wondered what the two threads had to do with each other. As you read this book, you may have the same experience, but rest assured that you need to give it a chance to unfold. Nalley takes the time to weave the story together and the reader wonders where this is going at times. The first person narratives from the little boy, Toby, paint a charming picture of a simple country family. Toby comes across as a very normal boy doing very normal boy things like running around with a toy gun and shooting it into the air or sitting in a swing to watch the rain fall. The heavier, third person narratives of times further back in history are engaging. They kept me wondering where this was going and how it would come together. Even the 2nd chapter referenced Bardstown, the same place where Toby and his family live, connecting it to 1864 and Jesse James. Curious about the historical pieces in the story, I did a little Internet searching and was impressed to find that everything I double-checked could be verified in a historical record. The back of the book has references to some of these sites where more can be learned of the actual history. All of this history comes together in Toby's mind much as a child's imagination takes in the surrounding world to create marvelous realms of fantasy. Toby along with the girl he "likes" and his cousin Colby embark on these mysteries together, much like children would do in the days before video games and cell phones. I could see myself in my childhood in the way they explored around town searching for clues, shared stories, and dug in the barn to uncover an unmarked grave. Personally, I just dug in the backyard to find gold with my friends, but I got in big trouble for that. At least Toby's crew finds what they are looking for. The reader of this story, if seeking a mystery of a wide variety of themes, will also find what you are looking for. It's a fun story, reminiscent of childhood in a simpler day, and explores the innocence of youth in conjunction with the savagery of historical figures.
