Mynheir's writing style is nothing less than outstanding, and Book 2 in The Truth Chasers Series picks up the summer after the first, "Rolling Thunder". From the Belly of the Dragon" focuses on another of the three main FDLE agents. Tim Porter is a man with a large wound. Coming off a recent divorce and deep depression, Porter struggles to keep his head above water.

Ahhhh..a situation I don't like to be in--writing about a book written by an awesome author but my having to write my thoughts about a book with which I am not so in love. In fact, I scan-read a good part of the book which usually is an automatic two stars from me--virtually all the time. However, I am giving this three stars. I did not like the part of the story from Ruby's POV (until her change of heart) and I loathed reading anything from the POV of Dr. Simmonds (I think it was the "creepy factor"). I loved the story from Tim's and law enforcement's POV and I did love the last fifth of the book as much as I have the others by Mynheir (probably that fifth accounts for the overall rating boost to three stars).

"From the Belly of the Beast" is a excellent novel. It involves a team of police officers investigating a case. The case is a missing student and it leads to a compound in Florida where a pop psychologist has set up a campus.

I do not want to say more details, as it might spoil a great read. The characters are realistic, the steeings believable, and the action is well done.

I highly recommend this book.

I love the style of this Christian author- fast paced action and suspenseful. Great character development. Before I even finished the book, I had to go online and order the next book in his series- The VOID. I hope Mark Mynheir writes a 4th book in this series.

Great book! I've passed it on to both my husband & son who both enjoyed reading it.

Simple

This book is written by a Christian dealing with the problem of cults. To some people, this goes overboard on the faith angle (I'd recommend you look at Bill Garrison's excellent two-star review of this book for an opposing view). For me, it's a plus; it also is a key element of the story.

Mark Mynheir's "From the Belly of the Dragon" is the second of a three part series. I haven't read either of the other installments, but have read the first book of Mynheir's Ray Quinn series. I like this one better; my opinion. The reason I selected this book is because I'm writing a novel which has a cult sub-plot and wanted to see how it's handled. It didn't disappoint at all.

One other comment. There is a grittiness to both books, but this one is more straight forward in its Christianity. Also, "The Night Watchman" by Mynheir is more of a mystery; this is more of a police drama/suspense story.

Writing wise, it grabs your attention. The plot keeps you at the edge of the seat. The characters could be a little stronger but they're not two-dimensional either.

I highly recommend this book.

In Rolling Thunder, we got to know FDLE agent John Russell and watch him as he struggled to resolve his past. We also met Tim Porter and Robbie Sanchez, his partners in crime, er, law enforcement. With this second installment of the Truth Chasers series, From The Belly of the Beast, by lawman turned novelist Mark Mynheir we get the opportunity to know Tim Porter and his estranged family better as he deals with the potential loss of his college aged daughter Ruby to a cult. At every turn Porter is stopped in his attempts to rescue his daughter from what he comes to believe is certain destruction. Then a young man who was under the tutelage of the mysterious Dr. Walter Simmons is murdered and the case falls into the laps of Tim and his follow FDLE friends.

Mark Mynheir continues with this novel to build his reputation for writing solid stories that are at once suspenseful, engaging and timely. Everyone knows that college campuses can be places of great learning and maturing for young adults. We also know it can be a breeding ground for less than desirable ideologies that sound good on the surface, but lack substance and hides darkness. It's evident that Mynheir has done his homework. Maybe even worked similar cases in his day job as an officer of the law in Florida. The suspense is palpable. The characters are real. In the case of Simmons, maybe too real. Scary to think people like him exist. I couldn't help but think of some of the so-called self-help gurus on the info-mericals at 3 am and the bookshelves everywhere.

Tim Porter is yet another character that Mynheir's deft hand is able to endear us to as we watch him strive to keep what little bit of family relationships he has with his wife and daughter. The courageous Ruby is a wonderful hero woven into the fabric of the story as she makes her way through this situation she found herself in. And one will cheer as Tim, Ruby and Gloria meet each other half way to try and make things work.
