This book resolves so many tensions. Ellis discerns the structure of John's portrait of Jesus. Chiastic analysis of biblical texts serves multiple purposes. In the case of the Fourth Gospel, it demonstrates the integrity and the unity of the text. Without knowing this structure the gospel can be a collection of confusing details. Ellis presents the material competently and convincingly. Once persuaded, one can then begin to appreciate the brilliance and artistry of John, who was a masterful literary architect.
