Daniel Barringer (May 25, 1860 – November 30, 1929) was a geologist best known as the first person to prove the existence of an impact crater on the Earth, Meteor Crater in Arizona. The site, owned privately by Barringer and now by his family, has been renamed the Barringer Crater in his honor, although this name is mainly used in the scientific community.

Daniel Moreau Barringer (July 30, 1806 – September 1, 1873) was a Whig . Congressman from North Carolina between 1843 and 1849. He joined the Democratic Party by the early 1870s. Born near Concord, North Carolina, in 1806 to Elizabeth Brandon and Paul Barringer, Daniel had nine siblings, including at least two brothers. His middle name is from French Huguenot ancestors, who came as refugees to North Carolina. The Barringer sons were likely tutored at home in their early studies.

Atomic absorption analyses of 25 metallic spheroids from Barringer Meteorite Crater have been carried out for Fe, Ni, Co and Cu. In addition, electron microprobe analyses of 58 impactite metallic particles have been carried out for Fe, Ni and Co from four different impactite samples. The normalized Ni, Co and Cu contents of the spheroids were from 13–22 per cent, . –1. 3 per cent and 260–430 μg/g, respectively.
