The Russian émigré Irina Baronova was 12 when she made her debut in Paris and retired from the stage 18 years later. Now 87, she has finally written her memoir. Rarely reflective, she offers surprisingly little insight into her own life and often resorts to cliché: As you have gathered, dear reader, I do have a hang-up about my dear mama. This is a pity, since her story is fascinating. Baronova’s parents came from prominent St. Petersburg families, highly placed in the service of the czar. Her paternal grandfather had been head of the Imperial Bank, and her father was a naval officer in the Imperial Fleet.

Irina Baronova wrote a wonderful autobiography in 2005 called "Irina: Ballet, Life and Love. Spotted by legendary choreographer George Balanchine at the Paris Opéra, she became, at age 13, one of his three famous "baby ballerinas" with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. There she worked with dance legends Léonide Massine, Michel Fokine and Bronislava Nijinska, as well as artists Picasso, Dalí and Matisse.
